1970's Phoenix Folder

Name: Sun Purchased: May 2009 Cost: craigslist, $50 and free delivery!

Background: inveterate craigslister that I am, I keep an eye on the bike listings. This Phoenix folder looked interesting, but it was down in Cottonwood. I emailed the owner and said that if he could get the bike to me in Flagstaff, I would give him his asking price ($50). He emailed me back saying he and his wife were attending a wedding in Flag in about 2 weeks and he could bring the bike to my house, if that was agreeable. It was.

When the guy got to my house and was unloading the bike, I asked him how he had come to be the owner (he was obviously way younger than the bike!). He explained that he and his wife were NAU alum, and that he had taken his car into Planet Jeep for something that was going to be way out of his immediate price range to fix. So he left his vehicle at Planet Jeep (until such time as he could get the necessary funds to fix it) and walked to the University. He soon realized that walking sucked, and he needed a bike for the interim. He said he was passing through a neighborhood very much like mine and that there was "this guy with about 1000 bikes for sale in his back yard". I pointed around the corner to BiciMundo, and he was like "yeah, I think this is it! Does that tall skinny guy still run it?". He also explained that he bought the bike for $50 and had ridden it for at least 7 years.

So it appears that Sun is a boomerang bike, returning home from whence she came. I like the symmetry in that, and that she appeared to be much like my Raleigh Twenty as far as configuration, and could benefit when I "upgraded" Pixie.

Upgraded from the Raleigh Twenty:
Wheels with Schwalbe Marathon 20x1.5 tires built into existing Sturmy Archer 3 speed hub
Shifter, brakes, levers and cables
Original vinyl Brooks seat
Black rubber grips

From my spare parts box:
Mirror
Rear light
Black metal basket

Proposed upgrades:
Foldable BF pedals
Wald collapsible baskets
Colored cables?
