NAU Vista maintains the latest syllabus for each Spring Class and Fall Class.

Courses

bullet FOR240 Introduction to Conservation Biology (3 units, every Spring, typically 12:45-2:00 Tuesday & Thursday). This class is open to students from all backgrounds, and is specifically targeted at undergraduates who are not majoring in fields related to managing natural resources. The course is a Liberal Studies class in the Science/Applied Science distribution block.

bullet

FOR504 Current Issues in Wildlife Management (3 units, Fall of Even Years, typically Thursday 2-5PM). This class covers a different issue each year. In Fall 2008, the topic will be Conserving Connectivity. Because about 50% of my time over the last 8 years has been devoted to designing and implementing wildlife linkages, this should be a rewarding experience for all participants. (Past topics have included Ecology and management of neotropical migratory birds, Wildlife conservation in tropical forests, Ecology and management of predators, Conservation biology of real and virtual islands, Recovery Plans for endangered species, Management of invasive species, and Top-down and bottom-up cascades involving birds and mammals). In 2009 and beyond the topics might include Climate change and wildlife conservation, or Community-based conservation in developing countries, or a topic you suggest (please do!) Because the topic changes each year, you may repeat the class for credit. .

bullet

FOR690 Research Methods (3 units, every Fall, 8:00-9:15 Tuesday and Thursday).  Goal is to prepare graduate students to conduct graduate level scientific research. The course focuses on developing the skills to define, organize, conduct, and evaluate scientific research. Each student is required to develop a research plan and to provide peer reviews of the plans of other students.

bulletFOR625 Applied Conservation Biology. (3 units, Fall of odd years, but it may switch to spring of even years). This class is designed for graduate students with previous coursework or experience in conservation biology who want to develop their ability to practice conservation biology. The class focuses on practice (assuming you already know the theory) and on conservation in landscapes dominated by managed (as opposed to strictly protected) lands.

bullet Wildlife Management Module (Semester A) (1 unit) within Forest Ecology (aka "Semester A" of the professional forestry program). During 2002-2005 I also serve as overall Coordinator for the 13-unit Semester A.
