The Mouse Couple

A children's book.

This authentic Hopi Indian folktale tells of a mouse couple seeking a powerful husband for their daughter. The father mouse journeys east seeking the brilliant sun as a suitor for his daughter. Although potent, Sun tells the mouse that its warmth and light can be blocked by the clouds, so the clouds must be more powerful. The mouse travels west to the Clouds, but is told that they can be scattered across the sky by the north winds. The mouse approaches the North Winds to discover that although they are strong they cannot move the butte. Butte withstands the sun, rain and winds, but points out that if the mouse and others like him banded together to burrow through the base of the butte, they would have the power to topple it. And so, the mouse comes full circle, back to its own kind.
