The Magic Hummingbird

A children's book.

In this authentic Hopi folktale, two young children left behind in the drought-stricken village of Oraibi mold a sunflower stalk into the shape of a hummingbird. When to their amazement it springs to life, the marvelous creature brings them food, then travels to the underworld to influence Muy'ingwa, the god of fertility. Muy'ingwa restores rainfall and fruitfulness to the land, promising to never again retreat so deeply underground.
This tale of creativity and playfulness in the midst of hardship, bringing about a magical solution to a life-threatening problem, is illustrated in brilliant color by Michael Lacapa who portrays not only the harshness, but also the dazzling beauty of Hopi life in its interdependence with nature.
