We're remodeling some parts of the house. First up, the kitchen and entryway floors.
Memorial Day weekend, tearing out the old floor:
What a pretty floor, circa 1980! Let's
tear it up and replace it with
something a little bit nicer. Paul removed the baseboards, then labored hard to
get the old, cheap
vinyl tiles up. The third picture shows how thin the flooring was (he is holding
a piece on edge).
Getting the glue up. The yellow stuff on the concrete is old
adhesive. Paul tried everything before
resorting to a glue stripper to get it up off the floor. Now the floor is clean
and ready for tile!
Monday night, I painted the entryway. Painting is so much easier when there are
no baseboards
or floor to worry about.
May 31, 2008. Laying ceramic tile in the kitchen and entryway:
Prep work - marking the floor, and figuring out how the heck to mix the mortar.
Laying the tile. We pulled a few up when we noticed a
repeating pattern. There is still a gap
in the doorway between the entryway and kitchen, where we plan to put some sort
of tile
pattern tomorrow.
Eight hours of back-breaking work later, we have a new floor!
June 1, 2008 - Oh, Grout!
Paul cut the tiles for this pattern in the doorway between the
entryway and kitchen. We think
it turned out great! It makes a nice transition from one room to the other. I
grouted the kitchen,
then the entryway. Now we have to wait three days, then will be able to apply
the grout sealer.
We've decided to use the kitchen as little as possible before the sealer is
down.
Oh, how I love preparing dinner in the bathroom. I made
salads, Paul cooked lamb chops on
the grill outside, and I cooked potatoes on the camp stove. Dinner was
fantastic!
The kitchen is done, everything moved back into place. Looks great!
Now, on to the living room!
