Grand Falls, Arizona -- March 15, 2008

Paul and I went to Grand Falls today. Grand Falls is the site of a massive basalt pour-over that filled the canyon
of the Little Colorado River (LCR). The falls are very impressive in the spring during the runoff. The Little Colorado
flows west and dumps into the Colorado River.

Here is a video of the falls, taken March 15, 2008.

1.  2.  3.

1. Alien Crossing. Yeah, it seemed like we were going into another world
2. Driving on the Navajo Reservation
3. The mountains of home, the San Francisco Peaks

4.  5.  6.  7.

4 & 5. First, we viewed the Falls from the top
6. Then, we hiked down a very steep trail to get to the bottom
7. Looking back up the steep, rocky trail

8.  9.  10.  11.

8. Holes in the lava wall. Do you see a face?
9. There are clay hills against the wall opposite the falls, where mist carries fine clay particles. These hills have
been building up for thousands of years; the clay is perfectly smooth.
10 & 11. The falls, from the bottom

12.  13.  14.  15.

12 & 13. The unfortunate evidence of human impact on nature
14 & 15. I watched this tumbleweed fall to its death over the edge of the cliff. Yep, folks, this is an Arizona
tumbleweed, perfectly designed to roll for miles and miles until it gets stuck to something or falls over
a cliff. The second picture gives a demonstration of how to avoid a sticky tumbleweed in the face
      when the wind kicks up.
