Day 2: Verona to Venice

Completing Day 1 was a big accomplishment because of all the unexpected obstacles that I eventually overcame. I felt confident, therefore, in my ability to complete Day 2. The distance was scheduled to be shorter than day 1, so I ventured out to highway 11, which was less congested than the previous day, and passed through many towns that offered good food. The ride was more scenic than day 1 and the foothills of the Alps to the north. The roads were rolling hills, mainly in and out of towns, but nothing too difficult. I had learned my lesson about entering and exiting big cities and had decided early in the day that I would bike to Padova and take a train into Venice. This was a very good decision... and my legs were grateful. Upon arriving in Venice, I quickly learned that it is no place for a bike. Before I go into the details, I want to STRONGLY suggest putting your bike in a locker at the train station.

My hotel (Casa Linger; ~30 euro/night, no breakfast) was located near San Marco Piazza, which is a about 4 km from the train station. That's not too far, but throw in all of the bridges that you must cross and the walk quickly becomes very tiring because you have to carry your bike up and down the stairs. Bikes are not allowed on the gondolas. Nevertheless, I made the most of it by touring the famous piazzas and finding a pizzeria that had cheap eats.

Summary: 80 km (50 miles); rolling hills and nice views of the Alps, Venice was no place for a bike
